Based on the available data on the pivalic acid it can be considered that the heptanoyl chlorid is with high proability acutely not harmful to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria.

Additional information

No data are available for the substance and its hydrolysis product heptanoic acid. Therefore, the short-term toxicity to aquatic algae is assessed via read across to the structurally similar substance - pivavoyl chloride.

Pivavoyl chloride rapidly hydrolyses in contact with water and forms pivalic acid (CAS 75-98-9) and HCl (CAS 7647-01-0). Therefore, the acute toxicity to algae will be assessed based on the information available for the hydrolysis products pivalic acid and HCl.

The reliable experimental data are available for the hydrolysis product of the source substance: pivalic acid.The toxicity of the hydrolysis product pivalic acid was tested in a GLP compliant study performed according to OECD 201 with Raphidocelis subcapitata (previous name Pseudokirchneriella subcapitataas test organism (Exxon, 2003). The 72-h ErC50 was found to be 979 mg/L. The NOEC is reported to be 246 mg/L. The test item concentration was analytically verified, and effect values are therefore based on nominal test concentrations.
