Description of key information

The substance exhibits acute toxicity to freshwater invertebrates. The estimated EC50 value in a 48-hour static test with daphnids was 9.1 mg/L. Due to the volatility of the test substance, the tests were performed in closed bottles.

A valid study on the acute toxicity of racemic menthyl acetate to the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna in a static system over 48 hours showed that the substance has acute toxicity to daphnids. The test was conducted with closed bottles due to the volatility of the substance. The nominal test concentrations were verified by analysis of the dissolved total organic carbon and effect levels were based on mean measured concentrations. No immobilisation of daphnids was seen at 4.9 mg/L over the test period. All daphnids were immobilised at a concentration of 16.8 mg/L. An EC50 value of 9.1 mg/L was estimated as the geometric mean of the EC0 and EC100 values. In a supporting study, aqueous solutions (100 ppm) of menthyl acetate were tested for their toxicity to mosquito larvae. Menthyl acetate produced 80% mortality of 3rd or 4th instar mosquito larvae when used at 100 ppm level, which supports the effect levels established in the key study.
