Instillation of 1-hexadecene in the eyes produced mild, transient redness of the conjunctival tissue. No effects on the cornea or iris were observed. Based on this test result, the author concluded that 1-hexadecene is not an eye irritant to albino rabbits.

The eye treated with control substance, 5% Ivory solution, showed greater response than any of the test substances.

Executive summary:

In a primary eye irritation study, 0.1 millilitre of 1-hexadecene was instilled into the conjunctival sac of six male albino rabbits. Treated eyes were not washed during exposure. The animals were observed at 24, 48 and 72 hours after exposure. Irritation was scored by the Draize method. In this study, 1-hexadecene is not an eye irritant based on the 24 hour average redness Draize score of 0.7. This result for the substance hexadec-1 -ene can be considered representative of the likely result that would be seen with the isomer 7 -methylenepentadecane.
