First-aid measures
In a general maner, in case of doubt or if symptoma are persitent, always seek medical advice.
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
In case of exposition by inhalation:
- In case of accident by inhalation: remove casualty to fresh air and keep at rest and for the warmth.
- Seek medical advice
- Oxygen or artificial inhalation
- Do not perform mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose respiration
In case of contact with eyes:
- Wash immediately with plenty of clean water for at least 15 minutes by keeping eyelids wide open.
- In any case, seek medical advice from an ophtalmologist and show him the label
In case of contact with skin:
- Wash immediately with plenty of water
- Remoce contaminated clothing under the shower
- Seek medical advice
If swallowed:
- Induce vomiting if conscious
- Seek medical advice
- Transport immediatly to hospital
Specific and immediate treatment:
An immediate specific treatment is necessary in case of intoxication (cyanokit=hydrocobalamine). Antidote for poisoning by cyanide and hydrogen cyanide.
Information for the doctor:
Keep in observation, even in lack of immediate signs.
Fire-fighting measures
Suitable extinguishing media:
- Water spray
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Foam
Unsuitable extinguishing media :
- High volume water jet
Special protective equipment for fire-fighters :
Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective suit, due to toxic gaz guven by thermal decomposition
Specific hazards:
Very toxic gaz formed (SOx, hydrogen cyanhyde)
Accidental release measures
Personal precautions:
- Avoid inhalation of vapours
- Avoid contact with the skin and the eyes.
- If the quantity release are important, evacuate and authorized for the intervention only the workers who are equiped of protective equipment
Environmental precautions:
- Dam up release with absorbent material not combustible, such as sand, inert earth, vermiculite, diatomaceous earth in trunk in order to destroy the wastes.
- Do not let product enter drains or river
- If the product contaminated groundwater, river and drains, alert the competent autorities.
Handling and storage
As HMTBN is a transported intermediate under strictly controlled conditions, specific measures are in place to handle and store the product in order to minimise as low as technically possible exposure and emission (see the following measures concerning handling and storage). The main part of the production and use are made in closed system.
Handling:
- Handle in well ventilated area
- Captation of vapour at their emission point
- Use retention tank
- Protect from contamination
Fire-fighting prevention:
- Access denied to person not authorized
Equipment and procedures recommended:
-Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at the emission source and a general ventilation
- Wear respiratory equipment for tasks of short duration or for emergency intervention
Equipment and procedures forbiden:
- Do not smoke, eat and drink in area where the produc is handled
Storage:
- Keep away from heat and sources of ignition. Do not smoke.
- Keep away from incompatible products
Packaging material:
- Specific metal container
- scpecifi tank train

Exposure controls / personal protection
HMTBN is a transported intermediate manufactured and used under strictly controlled conditions. The manufacture and the use are made into closed system that allow the minimisation as low as technically possible of exposure and emission. HMTBN is only put outside of the closed system during sampling. General protective measures and personal protection are in place to limit worker exposure as described below.
General protective measures:
- sufficient air exhaust in work areas, by aspiration to the work station and by general exhaust ventilation.
- Perfom regular atmospheric control
- Is the ventilation is not enought to maintain concentration below occuptionnal exposure limit (for HCN), wear respiratory equipment
- Detector of HCN
Respiratory protection:
- Avoid vapor inhalation
-Dispose of a self contained breathing apparatus
Hand protection:
- nitrile gloves
Eye and face protection:
-Avoid contact with eyes
- eye wash fountain in work area where the product is handled
- Safety glasses with side-shields, face sield
Skin and body protection:
- Protective clothing and safety shoes (Boots)
- safety shower
Stability and reactivity
Stable only in acid medium. In neutral or basic medium cyhanure hydrogen is formed.
Materials to avoid:
Strong oxidizing agents and base
Hazardous decomposition products:
hydrogen cyhanide, sulfur oxides, methanethiol
Disposal considerations
Do not dispose of waste into sewer and river.
Waste:
- Recycle or destroy (in accordance with local and national regulations), preferably by a specialised company
- Do not contamine soil or wtaer with waste
- Do not release into the environment
Contamined packaging:
- Drain fully the container. Keep the label on the container.
- Dispose to a specialised company
- Do not dispose in dump
- Clean with hot water (arround 80°C)
Waste codes:
07 01 99 : wastes not otherwise specified
15 01 10* : packaging containing residues of or contaminated by dangerous substances
