Description of key information

Additional information

Appearance/physical state/colour :

On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, 5-nitro-o-anisidine was found to be an odourless orange coloured organic amourphous powder solid at 23°C and 955 hPa.

Melting point/freezing point :

The melting point of 5-nitro-o-anisidine by the capillary method was found to be 18 °C at an atmospheric pressure of 955 hPa.There was no decomposition & sublimation observed of 5-nitro-o-anisidine at the melting point. The other authoritative supporting sources of information also indicate the melting point of 5-nitro-o-anisidine to be in the range 117 °C to 125 °C . However, for the purpose of the dossier as well as for the chemical safety report the experimental value of melting point of the key study will be considered.Melting point value at 101325 Pa is equivalent to 125.2°C .

Boiling point :

The boiling point of 5-nitro-o-anisidine by the distillation method was found to be 315 °C at the atmospheric pressure of 955 hPa. No decomposition of 5-nitro-o-anisidine was observed at the boiling point. The other authoritative source of information though indicate the boiling point to be in the range of 303°C - 351°C.However for the purpose of the dossier as well as for the chemical safety report, the boiling point of the key study which is 315°Cshall be considered. This boiling point value at 101325 Pa is equivalent to 334.21°C.

Density :

The bulk density of 5-nitro-o-anisidine by the mass by volume method was found to be 0.99 g/cm3 at room temperature of 23 °C .

The other authoritative source of information though indicate the density to be in the range of 1.207 - 1.318 g/cm3 .However for the purpose of the dossier as well as for the chemical safety report, the density of the key study which is 0.99 g/cm3shall be considered. This value when converted into 20 degC is equivalent to 0.86 g/cm3.

Particle size distribution (Granulometry) :

The particle size distribution (granulometry) of 5-nitro-o-anisidine by the sieve analysis method was found to be in the range of 53 µm to 500 µm. Majority of the particles were found to be in the size more than 75(49.6%) - 150(22.5%) µm in size.

Vapour pressure :

The vapour pressure of 5-nitro-o-anisidine was found to be 0.00013 mm Hg at 25 °C. This value after conversion equivalent to 0.0399 Pa at 25 °C.

Partition coefficient :

The experimental value of octanol water partition co-efficient (log Pow) of 5-nitro-o-anisidine is 1.16 at 23 degC and pH of 5.8.This value indicates that 5-nitro-o-anisidine is relatively hydrophilic in nature.

Water solubility :

The experimental value of the water solubility of 5-nitro-o-anisidine was found to be 2200 mg/L at 23 °C indicating that it is soluble in water. The supporting studies show values different from the key study which could be due to the difference in the estimation conditions. However for the purpose of the dossier and chemical safety assessment, the key study values shall be used.

Solubility in organic solvents / fat solubility :

The experimental value of solubility of 5-nitro-o-anisidine in methanol at 23 degC was found to be 440 mg/L indicating that this substance is

moderately soluble in methanol. This value at 20 degC is equivalent to 380 mg/L.

Surface tension :

In accordance with Column 2 adaptation statement of REACH Annex VII, information requirement 7.6, this end point was considered for waiver since surface activity was not a desired property of 5 -nitro-o-anisidine.

Flash point :

The experimental value of flash point of 5-nitro-o-anisidine by the closed cup method was found to be 119°C at 955hPa. The supporting studies show values different from the key study which could be due to the difference in the estimation conditions. However for the purpose of the dossier and chemical safety assessment, the key study values shall be used. This value when converted into 101 325 pascal is equivalent to 126.258 deg C.

Auto flammability :

5-nitro-o-anisidine did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 23 degC and atmospheric pressure of 955 hPa. This indicates that 5-nitro-o-anisidine is not auto-flammable.

Flammability :

From the experimental values of flammability, 5-nitro-o-anisidine ignited when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950°C was brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 5-nitro-o-anisidine is flammable only at high temperature of about 950 °C. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, 5-nitro-o-anisidine was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness :

Oxidising properties :

5-nitro-o-anisidine was found to have oxidising property since 649 ml of KMnO4 was required for getting the end point of the redox titration for 100 g of 5-nitro-o-anisidine

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products :

5-nitro-o-anisidine was found to be stable in organic solvent dichloro methane and no degradation products were formed after 24 hours as evident from the GC-MS chromatogram obtained at 0 hours and that obtained after 24 hours.

pH :

1% by volume solution of 5-nitro-o-anisidine was found to exhibit a pH of 5.50 at 24 °C. Thus 1% by volume solution of 5-nitro-o-anisidine is relatively acidic in nature.

Dissociation constant :

The average experimental pKa value for 5-nitro-o-anisidine was found to be (0.000000001683) 1.683 x 10-9 at 23°C indicating that it has dissociation properties. The average pKa value at 20 Deg C is equivalent to 0.00000000146 (1.46 x 10-9).

Viscosity :

This end point was considered for waiver since viscosity is an inherent property of a liquid that offers resistance to its flow and 5-nitro -o-anisidine is a solid substance and hence this testing was considered scientifically unjustified for 5-nitro-o-anisidine.
