Description of key information

Workers may potentially be exposed to cyclic acid anhydrides, with associated adverse health effects.

Additional information

Workers may be exposed to cyclic acid anhydrides including trimellitic anhydride and phthallic anhydride. Studies in human workers and volunteers provide important information about the pharmacokinetics of cyclic acid anhydrides, measurement of urinary metabolites and measurement of serum immunoglobulins. Irritation symptoms include itching, lacrimation, sneezing, rhinorrhoea, cough, and dyspnoea, which begin immediately following exposure to high concentrations of dusts or vapours. The most common allergic diseases are rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma

The substance is a member of the Selected Cyclic Acid Anhydrides category. This is a subgroup of a larger category, the Cyclic Acid Anhydrides, established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other expert scientific groups (WHO, 2009). The conclusion of a review of human health effects of exposure to cyclic acid anhydrides is that sensitisation and work-related respiratory and dermal irritation represent the critical risks. Data for several human health endpoints is obtained from category members.
