Description of key information

Hexyl D-glucoside (CAS: 54549-24-5) is not harmful to aquatic invertebrates under test conditions.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The short-term toxicity of hexyl D-glucoside (CAS: 54549-24-5) towards aquatic invertebrates was evaluated with marine and freshwater species. Daphnia magna was used for the freshwater tests (according to OECD guideline 202 "Daphnia sp. Acute immobilisation Test") and Acartia tonsa for the marine studies, respectively (equivalent to ISO 14669 "Water quality -- Determination of acute lethal toxicity to marine copepods (Copepoda, Crustaceae)). The freshwater tests exhibited EC50 values (48 h) of 490 mg a.i./L (Wetton, 1998) and > 100 mg/L (Wetton, 1997), respectively. Testing with the marine species A. tonsa resulted in a LL50 (48 h) of 730 mg/L but these results are based on nominal concentrations of water accommodated fraction (WAF) without analytics (Larsen, 2003).
