Additional information
The environmental fate and pathways and the ecotoxicity profile of the reaction mass of chlorodifluoroacetic acid (CDFA) and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is defined by the properties of its both constituents, i.e. CDFA and TFA.
Conclusion on classification
Based on data on the reaction mass and on its constituents, short-term E/LC50 values are available for algae (growth rate 72hEC50 = 7.7 mg/L), daphnia (48hEC50 > 100 mg/L) and fish (96hLC50 between 60 and 100 mg/L). The lowest EC50 is obtained in the algal toxicity test showing that the reaction mass is toxic to aquatic organisms.
Additionally, the constituents of the reaction mass are not readily biodegradable and have a low potential of bioaccumulation. Chronic toxicity data are available for daphnia and algae showing a 21d NOEC of 10 mg/L and a 72hNOEC of 0.32 mg/L respectively. Based on this information, the reaction mass is toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, Table 4.1.0 (b) (i), the Reaction mass of chlorodifluoroacetic acid and trifluoroacetic acid is to be classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment category chronic 2; H411 (Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects) since the chronic NOEC value for algae is below the classification criterion of 1.0 mg/L.
