Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Chromium trichloride is considered non-flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

The substance chromium trichloride is placed on the market in form of an aqueous solution and therefore emission of flammable gases is not of concern as shown by experience. Flammability of solids also is not required to be tested as from a chemical point of view the substance cannot be further oxidised being a chloride salt of chromium (III) thus providing no oxidisable substance to support oxidisation (i.e. flammability).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Chromium trichloride is not flammable and does not release flammable gases in contact with water. Additionally, it is not pyrophoric. Therefore, it is not considered flammable according to CLP (Regulation EC No 1272/2008) or DSD (Directive 67/548/EEC).
