Description of key information
Magnesium ethanolate rapidly hydrolyzes in aqueous environments (t1/2< 1 minute) into ethanol and magnesium hydroxide (detailed description in section 5.1.2). Valid study data on skin and eye irritation/corrosion are available for magnesium ethanolate as well as for the hydrolysis products magnesium hydroxide and ethanol.
Magnesium ethanolate
Skin: magnesium ethanolate can be considered as non-irritating to the skin according to the key study in rabbits.
Eye: moderately irritating according to an in vivo rabbit study.
Hydrolysis product magnesium hydroxide
Skin: The hydrolysis product magnesium hydroxide is non-irritant and not corrosive in the in vitro skin corrosion test.
Eyes: not irritating according to an in vivo rabbit and an in vitro BCOP study.
Hydrolysis product ethanol
Skin: The hydrolysis product ethanol is a well-known substance of very low potential to irritate the skin of humans. Several studies according to OECD guidelines have been included as a weight of evidence approach and ethanol was not classified as skin irritant.
Eye: irritating, based on data from the eye irritation databank.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Skin:
Neither magnesium ethanolate nor the hydrolysis products magnesium hydroxide and ethanol showed irritation in valid studies.
Eye:
Tests on magnesium ethanolate and the hydrolysis product ethanol met the criteria for classification as Eye Irrit.2 / H 319, causes serious eye irritation.
