Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In a guideline study the EC10 and EC50 for activated sludge was 9 and 30 mg a.i./L, respectively.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
30 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
9 mg/L

Additional information

An activated sludge respiration inhibition test was performed on C12-14 ADMAES according to OECD guidelines. The test was valid as shown by the EC50 of the reference compound 3,5 -dichlorophenol (15 mg/L), the coefficient of variation of the replicates of the control oxygen uptake rates (10%) and the average oxygen uptake rate for the control replicates (30 mg O2/g dry weight/hour). The toxicity of the test substance to activated sludge was determined at a contact time of 3 hours, using various concentrations of the test substance. The inhibitory effect of the substance at a particular concentration is expressed as a percentage of the two controls. No analytical determination was performed for the test substance. The EC50 of test substance in sludge after 3 hours of contact time was 30 mg a.i./L (95% confidence limits: 13 and 72 mg a.i./L). The EC10, EC20 and EC80 were 9, 14 and 66 mg a.i./L, respectively. The test substance was therefore considered harmful to activated sludge (Geerts R, 2012).
