Both of the main constituents of the substance contain an azo group, which is a known structural alert for explosivity. In addition, the oxygen balance value of each constituent is a greater positive than -200 (constituent 1: -71.5; constituent 2: -72.1). The DSC evaluation of the melting temperature of Red StR 172 states that "the curve drifts into the exothermic region" and that "there are indications of decomposition above 220° C". This indicates that exothermic decomposition occurs below 500° C, which is part of the criteria for judging the substance as non-explosive. In addition, the substance is not highly flammable (EU method A.10) and it is not auto-flammable up to 400° C (EU Method A.16). Based on these data, the substance is unlikely to be explosive.
