Description of key information

The substance is of low short-term toxicty to fish with key values of 96 h LC50 195 mg/L tested with HEDP-H on Oncoryhnchus mykiss (ABC, 1979) and 96 h LC50 2180 mg/L tested with HEDP-H on Cyprinodon variegatus (EG&G, 1976).

 

A 14 d NOEC value of 60 mg/L (as active acid) has been determined for the effects of HEDP-H on the altered behaviour and loss of equilibrium of the freshwater fish Salmo Gairdneri (now known as Oncorhynchus mykiss) (ABC, 1979). There are no true long-term toxicity to fish studies with the registration substance and this endpoint has been waived.

 

The registration substance is of low short-term toxicity to invertebrates with key values of 48 h EC50 527 mg/L with D. magna as HEDP-H (Monsanto, 1981) and a 96 h LC50 1770 mg/L with P. pugio as HEDP-H (EG&G, 1976).

 

A 28 d NOEC value of 6.75 mg/L has been determined for the effects of HEDP-H on adult mortality and offspring production of the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna (Monsanto, 1976).

 

The algal inhibition study has been waived on the basis that:

In accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI, the study does not need to be conducted because an assessment of the toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria is technically not possible due to substances complexing properties of essential nutrients present in the test media.

 

A weight of evidence approach is used for aquatic microbial inhibition studies. The available data supports a conclusion of an EC0 value of at least 200 mg active acid/L in aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms under prolonged exposure in STP simulation tests.
