Fluorescent Brightener 363 is a cationic benzimidazoles derivative. The substance is not expected to be ready biodegradable because of its chemical structure and its specific function. Commonly, brighteners undergo a primary transformation, i.e. discolourization due to the interrupting the conjugation. Nevertheless, the degradation process involves more steps and take more time.

The biodegradability potential has been investigated by BIOWIN estimation tool, which calculates the probability that a chemical under aerobic conditions with mixed cultures of microorganisms will biodegrade rapidly or slowly. On the basis of the estimation, the substance is expected to be not ready biodegradable.

In addition, multiple studies investigating BOD5 (Biolological Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) of the substance are available.

The BOD5/COD ratio was lower than 0.5 in all the available studies; according to the ECHA "Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment - Chapter R.7b: Endpoint specific guidance" (May 2008 version 1.1), if the BOD5:COD ratio is lower than 0.5, it can be expected that the substance is not readily biodegradable.

In conclusion, all the available information agrees to indicate the substance as not rapidly biodegradable.
