Description of key information

Appearance:

Based on available data from US EPA HPV Chemical Challenge Program,the chemical 2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino]  ethanol was observed to be an organic liquid in appearance at 20 degree C.

Melting point/Freezing point:

Based on the prediction done using the EPI Suite MPVPBP V1.43,the freezing point of chemical2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol was predicted.

The freezing point of chemical2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanolwas estimated to be 17.62˚C

Boiling point:

Based on available data from various reliable sources such as US EPA HPV Chemical Challenge Program and safety data sheets,the boiling point of chemical 2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol was determined to be 110 degree C.

Density:

Based on available data from reliable material safety data sheet,the density of chemical 2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino]  ethanol was determined to be in the range of 1.14 g/cm3 to 1.16 g/cm3 at 20 degree C.

Particle Size Distribution:

The study does not need to be conducted because the test chemical is marketed or used in a non- solid or granular form.

2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino]  ethanol was observed to be an organic liquid in appearance at 20 degree C.

Hence, this endpoint was considered for waiver.

Vapor Pressure:

The study was conducted according to OPPTS Guidelines 830.7950, and in accordance with GLPs.

The vapor pressure of 2-[hydroxy(methyl)amino]ethanol  at 20.0°C and 25.0°C were 1585 and 2116 Pa respectively.

MPBPVP v1.43 was used to estimate the vapor pressure of 2-[hydroxy(methyl)amino]ethanol. The estimated vapour pressure of 2-[hydroxy(methyl)amino]ethanol at 25 deg C was 3.07 Pa.

Partition Coefficient:

KOWWIN v1.68 was used to estimate the octanol water partition coefficient of2-[hydroxy(methyl)amino]ethanol.The estimated octanol water partition coefficient (logPow ) of2-[hydroxy(methyl)amino]ethanol was -2.2047.This value indicates that 2-[hydroxy(methyl)amino]ethanol is hydrophillic in nature.

Water Solubility:

This study was conducted in compliance with OECD Guideline 105 and in accordance with the EPA GLP standards (40 CFR 160).

2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol was determined to be completely miscible with water at 25.0 ± 0.5°C.

WSKOW v1.42 was used to estimate the water solubility of2-[hydroxy(methyl)amino]ethanol.

The estimated water solubility of 2-[hydroxy(methyl)amino]ethanol at 25 deg C was 1000000mg/l.

This value suggests that 2-[hydroxy(methyl)amino]ethanol is highly soluble in water.

Surface tension:

Based on the data from ACD labs, surface tension for 2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol was predicted to be 47.3 ± 3.0 dyne/cm.

Flash point:

Based on the scifinder database, the flash point of 2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino]ethanol (34375-28-5) was determined to be 132.6±21.3 degree C.Based on criteria mentioned in CLP regulation the chemical has flash point >than 60 degree C hence the substance was considered to be non-flammable.

Autoflammability:

2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°Cpressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that 2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol is not auto-flammable.

Flammability:

2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus 2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties

Oxidising properties:

The study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance contains oxygen or halogen atoms which are chemically bonded only to carbon or hydrogen and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Other supporting studies from various reliable safety data sheets indicates that the chemical 2-[(Hydroxymethyl)amino] ethanol was observed to be an organic colourless to pale yellow coloured liquid in appearance having amine/characteristic odour.
