Stability in air:

DMSO does not absorb light at wavelengths >290 nm and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight.

Stability in water:

DMSO is expected to be stable in water in the environmental conditions. DMSO is not expected to volatilize according to its Henry’s law constant. DMSO is readily reduced to dimethyl sulfide by reducing agents such as Sn(II), iodine, Ti(III), Cr(II) that may be present in the environment.

Stability in soils:

Metabolism of DMSO in soil by microorganisms results in the formation of sulfur and dimethyl sulfide. Reduction was significantly correlated with the organic C and N content of the mineral soils, anaerobically-mineralized N, microbial biomass C and aerobically mineralized SO4S.
