Reactive Groups

The appraisal of the molecular structure indicates no risk of rapid decomposition. Beryllium metal powder does not contain any of the structural features mentioned in the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria (5th revised edition). The occurrence of other chemical groups associated with explosive properties as described in the literature1 was also considered. No such groups were present.

Oxygen Balance

The oxygen balance is not considered relevant for the evaluation of the explosive properties of this substance as it is a metal powder, containing only Be.

Calorimetric Tests

The exothermic decomposition energy was determined using Differential Scanning Calorimetry in a closed, gold plated high pressure vessel (DSC). The decomposition energy was found to be far below the UN limit of 500 J/g.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Applying the internationally recognised UN Recommendation criteria, beryllium metal powder is not to be classified as explosive material and no experimental determination according to the Manual of Test and Criteria (Test Series 1 to 3, "Acceptance Procedure") has to be performed.
Thus it can be concluded that beryllium metal powder is not a potential explosive and does not have any potential for rapid energy release.
Executive summary:

The purpose of this study was to estimate the explosive properties of beryllium metal powder based on the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, Fifth revised edition, 2009, “Orange Book” where a set of criteria is compiled to identify materials being potential explosives.

Applying the screening procedure (Appendix 6), beryllium metal powder does not contain any chemical group which indicates explosive properties. Beryllium metal powder is not to be classified as explosive material and no experimental determination has to be performed. Thus it can be concluded that beryllium metal powder is not a potential explosive and does not have any potential for rapid energy release. The substance is not classified as explosive.
