Description of key information

Based on screening test data, the substance is considered to be not easily biodegradable in the environment. Persistence is assumed for the PBT assessment.

Considering the volatility as well as the anticipated poor biodegradability of 2-chlorotoluene, the valid key study on ready biodegradability was performed using inoculum from the preceding Zahn-Wellens-Test (supporting study, rapid elimination observed, probably due to stripping), i.e. pre-exposed to the test item. Accordingly, 2-chlorotoluene was tested for ready biodegradability under facilitated conditions. The test was performed compliant with GLP similar / equivalent to OECD TG 301F (Manometric Respirometry). The design of the test (closed respirometer flasks) took due account of the volatile nature of the test item. The result for reference substance aniline (68% after 28 days, >60% after 8 days) confirmed the activity of the inoculum. At a test item concentration of 100 mg/L no biodegradation was observed for 2-chlorotoluene within the duration of the test (0% within 28 days). Considering the adapted inoculum and its confirmed activity (reference substance aniline), the test item must be considered to be not readily biodegradable with high confidence. No other relevant data on biodegradability are available for 2-chlorotoluene.
