Biodegradation in water: readily biodegradable

For alcohol C12 -13 ethoxylates (CAS 66455-14-9) only one short abstract and an unreliable study are available. In the unreliable study (Kravetz, Shell, 1976) biodegradation was tested over 5 days resulting in 57% degradation. As biodegradation studies normally last for 28 days this study is regarded as unreliable. In the abstract of Sasol (1987) a degradation of the test substance of 89% is reported (based on DOC removal) after 19 d. This result is supported by a GLP-guideline study which is conducted with a comparable mixture (alcohol C12 -14 ethoxylates) according to OECD 301F. In the study of Junghans (Kolb, 2008), which is determined as key study, 95% degradation of the test substance was reported after 28 days of exposure for the parameter O2 -consumption. An additional supporting study is conducted with a pure homologue alcohol ethoxylate (C12 EO3) according to ISO 14593 under GLP. In that study a degradation of 73% was resported after 28 days of exposure.

Concluding from all data available alcohol C12 -13 ethoxylates are regarded as readily biodegradable. This result is in line with the results available for the other substances included in the category. For all members of the category a ready biodegradability is proved by several tests.
