Description of key information

In the key study a LC50 for fish of 0.96 mg/L could be determined after 96 h exposure.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Two GLP-studies and one non-GLP study on fish (Danio rerio, Oncorhynchus mykiss and Pimephales promelas) in semi-static and static systems are available dealing with different degrees of ethoxylation.

In the GLP-study of Collins (Shell, 1996) according to EPA OTS 797.1400 with fatty alcohols of a chain length of C12 - C13 and an degree of ethoxylation of 4.5 - 6 a LC50 of 0.96 mg/L (purity of test material: 100%) was determined. This study was defined as key study and thus is used in the further assessments.

In another GLP-study of Drottar & Swigert (Shell, 1995) according to the same guideline (EPA OTS 797.1400) for fatty alcohol ethoxylates (C12 - C13, EO 5) a LC50 of 1.0 mg/L (purity of test material: 100%) was determined. The non-GLP study reported a LC50 -value of 1 - 2 mg/L.
