Description of key information
Sorbitan tridocosanoate has a low potential for bioaccumulation.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
No experimental data on the bioaccumulation potential of Sorbitan tridocosanoate is available. However, the information gathered on environmental behaviour and metabolism, in combination with QSAR-estimated values, provide enough evidence (in accordance to the Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI General rules for adaptation of the standard testing regime set out in Annexes VII to X, 1.2), to cover the data requirements of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex IX and to state that the substance is likely to show negligible bioaccumulation potential.
Bioaccumulation refers to uptake of a substance from all environmental sources including water, food and sediment. However, the accumulation of a substance in an organism is determined, not only by uptake, but also by distribution, metabolism and excretion. Accumulation takes place if the uptake rate is faster than the subsequent metabolism and/or excretion.
The relevant uptake route in aquatic organisms is expected to be predominantly by ingestion of particle bound substance. The substance may adsorb to solid particles and thus may be taken up by fish or sediment dwelling organisms with their food. Sorbitan tridocosanoate is assumed to be metabolised and/or excreted by aquatic organisms (Soldano et al, 1992; Barron et al., 1999, Berg, 2002, Tocher, 2003).In addition, uptake is expected to be low based on the fact that the constituents of the substance are relatively large molecules with high molecular weights (ca. 1131.86 g/mol). Thus, according to Lipinski’s rule of five, they have a low potential to cross biological membranes (Lipinski, 2001).
Additional information on bioaccumulation by QSAR calculationsperformed with the representative components of Sorbitan tridocosanoateusing theCAESAR BCF Model version 2.1.14 as well as the BCF Meylan Model version 1.0.3 of the VEGA software v1.1.5. The components do not fall completely within the applicability domain of the used models, but may give sufficient indication for a low potential for bioaccumulation of the substance components. All calculated BCF values were < 500 L/kg.
Conclusion
Sorbitan tridocosanoateis characterized by a low water solubility (< 0.525 mg/L) and a high log Kow (> 5). Based on the physico/chemical properties such as low water solubility and high potential for adsorption a reduced availability in water is expected. Additionally, bioaccumulation potential is low due to metabolism and high molecular weight. It can be concluded that the bioaccumulation potential of the substance is negligible. BCF/BAF values estimated by QSAR also support this assumption (BCF values all well below 2000 L/kg).
Taking all these information into account, it can be concluded that bioaccumulation of Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, di-Me esters, hydrogenated (CAS 147853-32-5) is unlikely to occur.
