Description of key information
Based on the available genotoxicity and carcinogenicity data on the constituents of the reaction mass of calcium carbonate, calcium dihydroxide and silicon dioxide, the substance is not considered to be carcinogenic.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Instead of conducting new in vivo tests, available data on the constituents of the reaction mass of calcium carbonate, calcium dihydroxide and silicon dioxide were used to evaluate the carcinogenic potential of the substance. The available data indicate that most of the constituents of the substance are not suspected to be associated with cancer. The only constituent for which an association with cancer has been stated (IARC 1997) is silicon dioxide. IMA-Europe (IMA-Europe Position Paper, February 2010) recently stated that the current scientific knowledge on respirable crystalline silica rather justifies its classification as STOT RE cat. 1.
Therefore, based on the available genotoxicity and carcinogenicity data on the constituents of the reaction mass of calcium carbonate, calcium dihydroxide and silicon dioxide, a classification for carcinogenicity was not considered justified.
