Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Hydrolysis product 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid: Acutely harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of the parent compound 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl chloride was tested on Daphnia magna according to Directive 79/831/EEC, Annex V, Part C. The 48h EC50 was 26.9 mg/L (BASF AG, 1989). The test item concentrations were not analytically verified. Since 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl chloride rapidly decomposes in water and forms hydrochloric acid (CAS 7647-01-0) and 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid (CAS 3302-10-1), the reported effect may at least be partially related to degradation products.

The short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of the hydrolysis product 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid (CAS 3302-10-1) was tested on Daphnia magna in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 202 (Harlan, 2010, C84121). The 48h EC50 was 68 mg/L (test item concentrations analytically verified).
