Description of key information

Bioaccumulation testing in aquatic/benthic species is not required for substances with a low potential for bioaccumulation. Potassium allophonate has an experimentally determined log Pow ≤ -1.08, and given a lack of any lipophilic moieties in the chemical structure, the entire structure of potassium allophonate is hydrophilic and thus it has a low potential to cross biological membranes. Therefore, potassium allophonate has a low potential for bioaccumulation and testing for this endpoint is waived in accordance with Column 2 of Annex IX of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

According to Column 2 of Annex IX of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, bioaccumulation in aquatic/benthic species testing is not required for substances with a low potential for bioaccumulation (e.g., log octanol-water partition coefficient [log Pow] <3) and/or a low potential to cross biological membranes. Potassium allophonate meets both of these criteria. The experimentally-determined log Pow of potassium allophonate is ≤ -1.08 (ABC Laboratories, 2012a), and given a lack of any lipophilic moieties in the chemical structure, the entire structure of potassium allophonate is hydrophilic and thus it has a low potential to cross biological membranes.
