Additional information

4 -tert.-butylcyclohexylchroformate is corrosive to skin in a study comparable to OECD 404. A cloth (1 x 1 cm) soaked with 4 -tert.-butylcyclohexylchroformate was applied onto the skin of two rabbits. After 4 h the test substance was washed away. Strong erythema described as large and in areas surrounding the application site and slight edema have been noted. Beyond this Full thickness necrosis as well as crust scars and scale formation have been observed. Effects were not fully reversible with in 8 days.

50 μl 4 -tert.-butylcyclohexylchroformate were instilled into the eyes of 2 vienna whit rabbits Effects observe were sored. Due to the maked erythema in both rabbits in the first 24 h and the questional reversable cornea demage (fluoresein staining) the test substance is irritating ore severly irritating to the eyes. These effects developed after application of only 50 µl instead of 100 µl as demanded by OECD 405. This may hae influenced reverability of cornea damage. As the substance is corrosive to the skin, serious damages to the eye is implied.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: corrosive

Effects on eye irritation: highly irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Tert butylchloroformate is corrosive according to the classification criteria laid down in EU Regulation 67/548 (R34) and EU Regulation 1272/2008 (skin irr/corr Cat 1b). This classification implies severe damage to the eyes (R41; eye irr/cor cat 1).
