Description of key information

No human data are available and no specific toxicokinetic (TK) study using Trifluoromethanesulphonic anhydride has been performed.

Based on the physico-chemical properties of the substance, absorption by the three routes is considered likely. However, for inhalation and dermal routes, considering the strong corrosive properties of the substance, absorption should be mainly due to the destruction of epitheliums.

In an aqueous environment Trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride is rapidly hydrolysed to form trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (CAS RN 1493-13-6) so when absorbed in the body, the target substance is expected to be rapidly degraded into trifluoromethanesulfonic acid.

No indication of the test substance excretion was obtained but it is expected that trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride or rather its hydrolyse product, Trifluoromethanesulphonic acid, is excreted in the urine.

No human data are available and no specific toxicokinetic (TK) study using Trifluoromethanesulphonic anhydride has been performed. Therefore, the assessment of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of Trifluoromethanesulphonic anhydride is based on the physico-chemical properties of the test substance.

 

Physico-chemical properties:

- Vapor pressure of 93.18 hPa at 25°C.

- The partition coefficient in n-octanol/water is not measurable as the substance is reacting with water and quickly hydrolysed in trifluoromethanesulfonic acid.

- Water solubility is not measurable as the substance is reacting with water and quickly hydrolysed in trifluoromethanesulfonic acid..

- Molecular Weight: 282.13 g/mol

 

Absorption

Inhalation route

The substance is volatile as evidenced by the vapor pressure value, 93.18 hPa at 25°C, and thus may be absorbed through inhalation. However, because of its corrosive properties and respiratory tract irritating properties, prolonged exposition and absorption by inhalation is highly unlikely.

Oral route

An acute oral toxicity (Kashima, 1992) has been performed. However, the observed toxicity was mediated through local effect and no evidence of absorption has been observed. 

Dermal Route

As Trifluoromethanesulphonic anhydride is corrosive to the skin, it is not relevant to evaluate its dermal penetration. 

 

Distribution 

No evidence of distribution has been gathered and as the substance hydrolyse rapidly in trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, the distribution concerns mainly this substance.

Considering the very high water solubility of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, a large systemic distribution is expected, at least in the hydrophilic tissues. 

 

Metabolisation 

AS trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride is hydrolised in Trifluoromethanesulphonic acid metabolisation is not relevant. Trifluoromethanesulphonic acid is not expected to be metabolized.

Excretion 

As trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride is hydrolised in Trifluoromethanesulphonic acid, excretion is not relevant . Due to its low molecular weight and the high water solubility, Trifluoromethanesulphonic acid is possibly excreted in the urine.
