Additional information

In water sodium nitrite dissociate immediately into sodium and nitrite ions. The nitrite ion is a component of the nitrogen cycle. In the environment, bacteria of the genus Nitrobacter oxidise nitrites to nitrates. Nitrates are reduced to nitrogen by anaerobic bacteria present in soil and sediment. Therefore, a sediment toxicity test of sodium nitrite is not provided.
