Sodium nitrite showed a very wide range of effects in different species from the same organism group and between the different levels of biological organization. The most sensitive species was the rainbow trout and carp. However, according to data from OECD SIDS dossier other freshwater fish are not affected by the test substance, because of the ability of certain species, such as eels, bass and sunfish to prevent nitrite from crossing the gill membrane and entering the blood. For aquatic invertebrates the test substance is acute toxic. In a chronic study over 80 days a NOEC of 9.86 mg/L for the jumbo tiger prawn was estimated. Chronic nitrite exposure of early-life stages of common carp affected their survival, growth rate, early ontogeny, and histology. The values of NOEC and LOEC were calculated on the basis of accumulated mortality and estimated at 7 mg/L and 28 mg/L NO2+, respectively. However, even the lowest nitrite level (0.7 mg/L NO2+) caused considerable physiological changes, especially delayed early ontogeny accompanied. In contrast, no toxicity was determined for algae and microorganisms.
