Acute tests on all three trophic levels were performed to examine the aquatic toxicity of sodium formate. The effect concentrations (L(E)C50) were clearly above 100 mg/L. Therefore, it can be concluded with high probability that sodium formate is acutely not harmful to aqautic organisms.
Regarding chronic effects, a long-term study with Daphnia magna performed with formic acid is available. The NOEC (21d) was determined to be 100 mg/L. Thus, with high probability no chronic effects are expected for aquatic organisms.
