Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

1,3 -Butadiene is not considered to be readily biodegradable. 1,3 -Butadiene is also expected to have low potential for bioaccumulation and adsorption to soil and sediment based on its measured log Kow of 1.99. Structural analysis of the 1,3-butadiene molecule indicates that it is not expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment due to the lack of hydrolysable functional groups. The physico-chemical properties of 1,3-butadiene indicate that the majority of this substance will ultimately be released to the atmosphere where it is quickly photooxidised with an estimated half-life of approximately 0.24 days.

1,3 -Butadiene is not expected to persist in the environment because it has a low potential for adsorption to organic matter, has a low potential for bioaccumulation and is rapidly degraded in the atmosphere by photooxidation reactions. The latter degradation mechanism will contribute significantly to the fate of 1,3-butadiene in the environment because it is a gas and preferentially partitions to this compartment.
