Ignition of the test substance within 5 minutes after introduction was observed with each sample volume and with each test a minimum auto-ignition temperature was obtained. The maximum deviation between the three values was < 20°C. According to the guidelines, no further testing was required.

The lowest temperature at which ignition of the test substance occurred was 324°C. This temperature was rounded off to the nearest multiple of 5°C giving an auto-ignition temperature of the test substance of 320°C.

Conclusions:
A commercially available auto-ignition temperatures apparatus was used for the determination of the degree of auto-ignitability of 2-sec-butylphenol. The test substance is auto-ignitable with an auto-ignition temperature of 320°C at 1012.5 – 1022.4 hPa.
Executive summary:

The auto-ignition degree of 2 -sec-butylphenol was determined using a commerciable available auto-ignition temperatures apparatous (Chilwoth Technology, Southampton, UK). The method employed followed EU Method A.15 (Auto-Ignition Temperature (Liquids and Gases)), DIN Guide 51794 (Determining the Ignition Temperature of Petroleum Products) and IEC standard 79-4 (Electrical Apparatus for Explosive Gas Atmospheres, Part 4, Method of Test for Ignition Temperature). The estimated auto-ignition temperature in the preliminary test was 355°C. In the main study, three tests were performed. Ignition of the test substance within 5 minutes after introduction was observed with each sample volume, and with each test a minimum auto-ignition temperature was obtained.

The test substance resulted auto-ignitable with an auto-ignition temperature of 320°C at 1012.5 – 1022.4 hPa.
