- Age at study initiation: adult
- Weight: 1.5-2 kg
- Housing: individually in metal cages
- Diet: ad libitum access to standard rabbit food - NAFAG, Gossau SG
- Water: ad libitum access to water
- Acclimation period: a minimum of 4 days.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Temperature (°C): 22 ± 1

- Photoperiod (hrs dark / hrs light): 10 hour light cycle day

Test system

Vehicle:
unchanged (no vehicle)
Controls:
other: Negative control: Untreated eye
Amount / concentration applied:
TEST MATERIAL
- Amount applied: 0.1 g
Duration of treatment / exposure:
one instillation
Observation period (in vivo):
7 days
Number of animals or in vitro replicates:
6: 3 male, 3 female
Details on study design:
Application: The test material in an amount of 0.1 g was inserted into the conjunctival sac of the left eye of the 6 rabbits and the lids were gently closed for a few seconds. The right eye was not treated and served as an untreated control.

REMOVAL OF TEST SUBSTANCE
- Washing (if done): In 3 of the 6 rabbits approximately 30 seconds after treatment the treated eye was flushed with 10 ml of physiological saline.

SCORING SYSTEM: The eye irritation was appraised on day 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 and was scored for each individual rabbit on Cornea (Opacity, Area involved), Iris and Conjunctiva (Redness, Chemosis, Discharge).

TOOL USED TO ASSESS SCORE: slit lamp
