In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex IX, short-term toxicity to terrestrial arthropods (required in section 9.4.1) does not need to be conducted as direct and indirect exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely. Cesium has no potential to adsorb to soil and carbonates are natural components of soil minerals. According to the available information, an input via sludge application on agricultural soil is considered to be negligible, as cesium carbonate does not adsorb to the sewage sludge to a significant extent. Pursuant to its physico-chemical properties cesium carbonate is not expected to be distributed into soil. The log Pow is estimated to be around ≤ 0 due to its salt character and good water solubility as expected for an inorganic salt. It can be concluded, that the risk for the terrestrial athropods / terrestrial compartment is low and no further information and/or testing is needed.
