Description of key information
Effects of the test item CA 2343A, an intermediate of CGA 293343 on adult earthworms, which were placed in a defined substrate containing the test item, were examined. Mortality of earthworms was recorded after 7 and 14 days. In addition, the weight of surviving worms was determined at day 0 and at day 14 and weight alterations of treated worms were compared to untreated controls.
Based on the results of a preliminary range-finding test at a concentration range of 1 to 1000 mg/kg dry weight of soil (causing no mortality) the definitive test was performed as a limit test at a concentration of 1000 mg/kg dry soil in comparison with the untreated control. After 14 days exposure, no mortality was recorded in the test item group or control group. After the evaluation of the results and after a statistical analysis (computer program EASY ASSAY Multiple Testing), a significant difference regarding the body weight compared to the control was calculated. No other sublethal symptoms were observed at 1000 mg/kg dry weight of soil, such as increased burrowing time or flaccidity.
The sensitivity of the test system was demonstrated with the reference item 2-chloroacetamide which was tested at concentrations of 11, 14, 18, 24 and 31 mg/kg dry weight of soil. In the most recent test with the reference item, dated 27.03.01, the LC50was calculated at 19.2 mg/kg dry weight of soil.
Founded on these results no negative effects on worm survival could be demonstrated. Hence the highest concentration with no lethal symptoms observed was 1000mg/kg dry weight of soil (i.e. the highest rate tested) and the LC50of CA 2343 A to Eisenia fetida could not be determined after 14 days exposure but is clearly shown to be greater than 1000 mg/kg artificial soil.
Concerning the living weight/worm there was a reduction of 30.6% in the 1000 mg/kg d.w. treatment of CA 2343A over 14 days. This reduction was statistically significant from the control weight reduction of 9.3% over the same period.
