Description of key information

The chemical safety assessment of methyl (S)-lactate did not indicate the need for long-term testing on fish. Thus, this endpoint is waived.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Column 2 of Annex IX of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 specifies that long-term toxicity testing shall be proposed by the registrant if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on fish. Since short-term effect concentrations of methyl-(S)-lactate on fish were above 100 mg/L, i.e. the guideline-compliant limit concentration, which is the concentration relevant for classification and labelling, long-term toxicity tests on fish need not be conducted. Furthermore, methyl (S)-lactate is readily biodegradable (see section 5.2.1) and as a consequence, no chronic exposure of fish is expected. Therefore, and for reasons of animal welfare, a long-term toxicity study in fish is not provided.
