Studies investigating long-term toxic effects of the target substance Bis(1-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 108-63-4) on aquatic invertebrates are not available. Thus, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally related source substances Bis(7-methyloctyl) adipate (CAS 33703-08-1), and Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) was conducted to fulfil the data requirements. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment. This read-across is justified in detail within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13.

The long-term toxicity of the source substance Bis(7-methyloctyl) adipate (CAS 33703-08-1) to Daphnia magna was tested in a guideline study according to OECD 202, part II. The semi-static test was performed with nominal test substance concentrations of 3.2, 10, 32 and 100 µg/L. Analytical dose verification was performed and determined concentrations of 3.9, 10.9, 34.5 and 100.8 µg/L (meas. arith. mean). The test organism Daphnia magna was exposed to the test concentrations for 21 days. Detrimental effects on the survival of parent Daphnia and the number of offspring were not observed. Based on the reproduction of the Daphnids a NOEC (21 d)≥ 0.1008 mg/L (meas. arith. mean) was determined .

One study on the long-term toxicity of the source substance Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) is available. The test was conducted according to OECD 211 as a semi-static limit test at nominal test substance concentrations of 5.0, 16 and 50 mg/L. The analytical dose verification determined test substance concentrations of 3.8, 14 and 46 mg/L (meas. TWA). The determined NOEC (21 d) was 14 mg/L (meas. TWA) based on the reproduction rate.

Based on the available data for the read across substances no chronic toxic effects on aquatic invertebrates are expected within the limits of water solubility of the target substance Bis(1-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 108-63-4).
