Conclusion on classification
Aluminium tribenzoate is an organometallic acid with a pKa of 4.2. As a result, at the experimental pH of the ecotoxicological studies (pH =7), the substance will be fully ionised. Due to its complex speciation, the Aluminium will precipitate as Al(OH)3 and no Al3+ will be present. During test solution preparation, the precipitated Al(OH)3 was filtered off. Therefore, only dissolved benzoate was present in the test solution. Any effects observed can be solely attributed to benzoate. Therefore, Article 4.1.1.3.2 of Regulation EC1272/2008 does not apply and classification is based on Table 4.1.0.
The following relevant key results are currently available for deriving the classification of the substance for the environment:
- Cyprinus carpio: 96h-LC50: >64 mg/L
- Daphnia magna: 48h-EC50: >81 mg/L
- Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata: 72h-ErC50: 21 mg/L, NOEC: 5.2 mg/L
- Readily biodegradable in an OECD 301B study
- Log Kow: -0.1
Acute (short-term) aquatic hazard:
The acute LC50 or EC50 values are > 1 mg/L. The substance does not need to be classified for this hazard category according to Table 4.1.0(a) of Regulation EC1272/2008.
Long -term aquatic hazard:
One chronic value is available, for algae. As there are no chronic values available for fish and crustacea, the chronic classification has to be determined with the available chronic data for algae based on CLP Table 4.1.0 (b)(ii), as the substance is readily biodegradable, and with the available acute data for fish and daphnia magna based on CLP Table 4.1.0 (b) (iii). The most stringent classification is valid;
- CLP Table 4.1.0 (b)(ii): As the NOEC is > 1 mg/L, the substance does not need to be classified based on this key result.
- CLP Table 4.1.0 (b)(iii): As the E(L)C50 values are >10 to =< 100 mg/L but the substance is readily degradable and has LogKow ≤ 4, the substance does not need to be classified based on these key results.
