Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

The physical and chemical properties of succinic anhydride have been determined experimentally and published in a number of standard reference handbooks. Succinic anhydride is a solid, colourless compound. The crystalline form has been described as needles from alcohol or rhombic pyramids from chloroform or carbon tetrachloride. The melting point and boiling point of succinic anhydride is 119 °C and 263.5 °C, respectively, using differential scanning calorimetry. Succinic anhydride has a relative density of 1.234 at 20 °C, a vapour pressure of 2.86 × 10-6 mm Hg at 25 °C, partition coefficient of 2.44, and water solubility of 62.9 g/L at 20 °C and pH 2.

The dissociation constant of non flammable succinic anhydride at 20 °C is pKa = 4.67.

The median particle size L50 of the test items deduced from the particle distributions is 1197 µm.

Testing waivers have been submitted for flash point, auto flammability and viscosity as these studies are not technically feasible with succinic anhydride. Waivers for surface tension, explosivity testing, oxidising properties, and stability in organic solvents have also been submitted based on lack of scientific justification.
