Description of key information

In an algae study according to OECD 201 2-decyltetradecanoic acid was found to not inhibit the growth of the freshwater green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata after 72 hours. No effects were found up to the maximum water solubility level (estimated ≤ 0.9 µg/L), which is below the nominal loading level of the saturated solution with 10 mg/L. Therefore, no effects were found in the range of water solubility of the test item.

For investigation of the acute toxicity of 2 -decyltetradecanoic acid an acute daphnia test according to OECD 202 was conducted. The EC50 (48 h) was > 100 mg/L. Due to low water solubility of the test substance a filtrate of a supersaturated stock suspension of nominal 100 mg/L was tested. The 48-hour EC50 was clearly higher than the solubility limit of the test substance in the used test water.

In the acute fish study according to OECD 203, the saturated solution of the test item 2-decyltetradecanoic acid was found to have no effect on the vitality of zebrafish after 96 hours. No effects were found up to the maximum water solubility level (estimated 0.0122 µg/L), which is below the nominal loading level of the saturated solution of 100 mg/L. Therefore, no effects were found in the range of water solubility of the test item.

Additional information

The ECOSAR calculation predicted no effects for all trophic level, means for fish, algae and daphnia (ECOSAR V1.00 Class).

If the log Kow is greater than 5 (for Fish LC50 (96 h), daphnids LC50 ) or greater than 6.4 (for green algae EC50)

or if the compound is solid and the LC50 exceeds the water solubility by 10x; no effects at saturation are predicted. The log Kow is 10.82. The 48-hour EC50 was clearly higher than the solubility limit of the test substance in the used test water.
