Description of key information
Additional information
Appearance/physical state/colour
On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was found to be odourless and colourless organic liquid at 39 degC and 920 hPa.
Melting point/freezing point
Freezing point of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was found to be 7.5 deg.C.
Boiling point
The boiling point of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate by the distillation method was found to be 103 degC at an atmospheric pressure of 920 hPa. No decomposition of the substance was observed at the boiling point. This boiling point value at 101 325 hPa is equivalent to 113.439 ° C.
Density
The density of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate by the mass by volume method was found to be 1.022 g/cm3 at room temperature of 39 °C .This value when converted at 20 degC is equivalent to 1.99 g/cm3.
Particle size distribution (Granulometry)
Granulometry (particle size distribution) is a property that is relevant only to solids. Since sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate is a liquid substance this testing was not scientifically possible and hence this end point was considered for waiver.
Vapour pressure
Vapour pressure of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was estimated to be 0.000000000133 Pa at 25°C.
Partition coefficient
The experimental value of octanol water partition co-efficient (log Pow) of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate is -0.6020 at temperature 39 degC and pH of 6.96.This value indicates that the substance is hydrophilic in nature.
Water solubility
The experimental value of the water solubility of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was found to be 1000000 mg/L at temperature of 39 degC indicating that solubility of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate is very soluble in water.
Solubility in organic solvents / fat solubility
Gravimetric method was used to determine the solubility of the substance in organic solvent. The experimental value of solubility of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy)ethyl sulphate in methanol at temperature of 39 degC was found to be 20000 mg/L indicating that sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy)ethyl sulphate is very soluble in methanol.Using the Soxhlet/Solvent extraction method the solubility of the substance in Petroleum ether is observed to be 4000 mg/L at 39°C, indicating that the substance is soluble in petroleum ether.
The solubility value of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy)ethyl sulphate in methanol at 20 degC is equivalent to a value of 39000mg/L.
Surface tension
From QSAR prediction for surface tension of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was estimated to be 49.414mN/m at 20 deg.C
Flash point
The experimental value of flash point of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate by the open cup method was found to be 104 deg C at 920 hPa.This value when converted at 101325 Pa is equivalent to 114.54 degC.
Auto flammability
Sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 39 deg C and atmospheric pressure of 920 hPa. This indicates that sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate is not auto-flammable.
Flammability
From the experimental values of flammability, sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy)ethyl sulphate ignited when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950 degC was brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy)ethyl sulphate is flammable only at high temperature of about 950 degC. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy)ethyl sulphate was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.
Explosiveness
According to theoretical considerations based on chemical structure, sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy)ethyl sulphate does not possess explosive properties. The reason for this is there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties in sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy)ethyl sulphate. Thus, as per column 2 of Annex VII this end point was considered for waiver.
Oxidising properties
Sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was found to have mild oxidising property since 59.34 ml of KMnO4 was required for getting the end point of the redox titration for 100 g of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate. This oxidation potential was not considered strong enough for for classifying the chemical as an oxidising liquid. Thus, the chemical is considered as non-oxidising for the purpose of chemical safety report and classification.
Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products
Sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was found to be stable in organic solvent dichloro methane and no degradation products were formed after 24 hours as evident from the GC-MS chromatogram obtained at 0 hours and that obtained after 24 hours.
pH
1% by volume solution of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was found to exhibit a pH of 6.47 at 26 degC. Thus 1% by volume solution of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was found to be near neutral in nature.
Dissociation constant
The experimental pKa value for sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate was found to be 0.0000000000000000043,at 39 degC indicating that it has dissociation properties. This pka value when converted at 20 degC is equivalent to 0.0000000000000000022051.
Viscosity
Viscosity of sodium 2-(2-dodecyloxyethoxy) ethyl sulphate at temperature of 39 deg C was found to be 182.78 mPa s.This value when converted at 20 degC is equivalent to 356.421 mPas.
