Additional information

The assessment of the acute toxicity of the heptanoyl chloride to aquatic invertebratesis is based on a read-across to the structurally related substance pivavoyl chloride.

Pivavoyl chloride rapidly hydrolyses in contact with water and forms pivalic acid (CAS 75-98-9) and HCl (CAS 7647-01-0). Therefore, the acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates will be assessed based on the information available for the hydrolysis products pivalic acid and HCl.

 

The reliable experimental data are available for the hydrolysis product of the source substance: pivalic acid. The acute toxicity of the hydrolysis product pivalic acid to aquatic invertebrates was tested according to US EPA – 660/3-75-009 (Methods for Acute Toxicity with fish and Macroinvertebrates, and Amphibians; 1975) using Daphnia magna as test organism (EG & G Bionomics, 1977). The 48-h EC50 was found to be 202.9 mg/L, based on nominal test concentrations.The test concentrations were not analytically monitored.
