BASF (1998) reported about the acute dermal irritation/corrosion in the rabbit. Three animals were covered with the undiluted test substance for 3 minutes and 1 hour. Heptanoyl chloride gaves indication of causing full-thickness destruction of skin tissue as a result of an exposure period of 1 hour. After an exposure period of 3 minutes, the skin findings were not reversible within 8 or 15 days. The findings were confirmed by histopathological examination.

As the product corrodes the skin, it can be expected to have a similar effect on the eyes, also.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the results, the test item is classified as skin corr. cat. 1B (H314) according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).
