Description of key information

Parent compound heptanoyl chloride and hydrolysis product heptanoic acid: Significant accumulation in organisms is not to be expected.
However, the assessment of the bioaccumulation potential of the parent compound may be of low relevance, due to the rapid hydrolysis of the acid chloride in aqueous solutions.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A study is not required for this tonnage band. Moreover and in accordance with column 2 of Annex IX, the study does not need to be conducted if the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (for instance a log Kow ≤ 3). Heptanoyl chloride (CAS 2528-61-2) has an estimated log Kow of 1.98 (KOWWIN v1.68). The substance decomposes rapidly to form HCl and heptanoic acid (CAS 111-14-8). The experimental log Kow of 2.42 (PhysProp database, EPI Suite v4.11) for the hydrolysis product heptanoic acid does not indicate a significant potential for bioaccumulation.
