Additional information

In the aquatic environment, boron is expected to be the active species of orthoboric acid, potassium salt. Boron is not considered toxic to aquatic invertebrates as established by numerous acute toxicity studies. Additionally, orthoboric acid, potassium salt was tested as manufactured (45% w/w in highly refined mineral oil) in Daphnia magna in accordance with EPA OTS 797.1300. During the study, the daphnia were exposed to the test material at nominal concentrations of 0, 10, 26, 64, 160, 400 and 1000 mg/L under static renewal conditions; all tests were conducted using water soluble fractions. Under the conditions of the study no immobilisation was observed among daphnids exposed to any of the treatment levels tested at study termination. Sub-lethal effects (e.g. lethargy,

erratic behaviour) were observed among mobile daphnids exposed to the five highest treatment levels tested. No immobilisation or toxicant related sub-lethal effects were observed among organisms exposed to the 10 mg/L or control solutions. Based on the nominal concentrations of test material, the 48 hour EC50 value was determined to be >1000 mg/L and the NOEC to be 10 mg/L. The study was performed in line with GLP and an accepted standardised guideline with a high standard of reporting and assigned a reliability score of 1.
