Description of key information

Repeated dose toxicity inhalation:

The cross sectional study of 75 workers exposed to Ge and 79 matched referents aimed to assess occupational exposure to inorganic germanium (Ge) in workers from a producing plant, and to assess the health of these workers, with a special focus on respiratory, kidney, and liver functions (Swennen et al 2000). The observations from the epidemiological study showed no adverse effects on chronic exposure up to 300 μg Ge / m³ (metallic germanium and germanium dioxide and other inorganic germanium compounds). In particular, a relevance of local respiratory toxicity for this concentration range can be excluded. Indications of nephrotoxicity are also not sufficiently probable (no proteinuria based on tubular renal effects; only minimal changes in glomerular functional parameters). An exposure-related nephrotoxic effect could not be inferred from the observations.
