Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The "T" criterion is checked against NOEC data from (standard) long term ecotoxicity tests. Since the lowest NOEC/EC10 observed for the Ge-ion is > 0.01mg/l (i.e. 0.070 mg/l, see section 6.1.), Germanium and Ge-substances are not to be considered "T" under PBT assessment (guidance R7.b.).

The "P" criterion is not applicable to inorganic substances as such. Experimental data (transformation/dissolution, see section 4.8) demonstrate that upon addition of Ge-substances to water, the Ge concentration in the water column very rapidly decreases. After 4 weeks, 80% of the Ge is removed from the water column. Based on these observation, the Ge-substances are not to be considered as "equivalent to persistent" in the water column.

Criterion "B" : no data

Based on the considerations above, it is concluded that Germanium and Ge-substances are not PBT.
