Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In a guinea pig maximization test, no positive response was noted in any of the animals exposed to n-butyl propionate (50% in corn oil), hence based on the Guidance to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures, n-butyl propionate will not be classified for skin sensitization.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

In a non-GLP guinea pig maximization test conducted similar to OECD TG 406, butyl propionate (50% in corn oil) did not demonstrate dermal sensitization potential with no positive response noted in any animals exposed.

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

There are no studies available for assessment of respiratory sensitization of pentyl propionate and since skin irritation was not noted in the GLP study conducted according to OECD TG 429, it is expected that pentyl propionate will not cause respiratory irritation.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In a non-GLP guinea pig maximization test conducted similar to OECD TG 406, no positive response was noted in any of the animals exposed to butyl propionate (50% in corn oil). There are no studies available for assessment of respiratory sensitization of butyl propionate and since skin irritation was not noted in the GLP study conducted according to OECD TG 429, it is expected that butyl propionate will not cause respiratory irritation.

On the basis of the available information and based on the Guidance to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures, butyl propionate will not be classified for skin or respiratory sensitization.
