experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
25 FEB 2000 - 08 MAR 2000
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:
EG-Guideline 92/69/EEC A.10.
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

In the preliminary test it was found that the substance melted when heated with a gas flame and could be ignited. Within 4 minutes the fire did not spread over a length of 200 mm. Only the molten substance burned. The substance is therefore not easily flammable.

The burning rate test has not to be performed because the substance is not readily flammable.

Interpretation of results:
other: EU GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
It was found that the test substance is not easily flammable.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test item was tested according to EU-method A.10 in a GLP study. In the preliminary test it was found that the substance melted when heated with a gas flame and could be ignited. Within 4 minutes the fire did not spread over a length of 200 mm. Only the molten substance burned.

The substance is therefore not easily flammable in the sense of EG-Guideline 92/69/EEC A.10 and in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

The test substance is not regarded as hazardous according to the EU Test Method A. 12.

Interpretation of results:
other: EU GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The test substance is not regarded as hazardous according to the EU Test Method A. 12.
Executive summary:

The flammability in contact with water of the test item was tested according to EU Method A.12 in a GLP study. It was found in the test, that within 7 hours the test item in contact with water does not evolute gases. Therefore, the test substance is not regarded as hazardous according to EG-Guideline 92/69/EEC A.12 and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Interpretation of results:
other: EU GHS criteria not met
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is completely molten at 160°C
Interpretation of results:
other: EU GHS criteria not met

Description of key information

Flammability:

The flammability of the test item was tested according to EU Method A.10 in a GLP study.

Flammability, contact with water:

The flammability in contact with water of the test item was tested according to EU Method A.12 in a GLP study. It was found in the test, that within 7 hours the test item in contact with water does not evolute gases. Therefore, the test substance is not regarded as hazardous according to EG-Guideline 92/69/EEC A.12 and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Flammability, pyrophoric solids:

The study is scientifically not necessary, because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days). Therefore, it can be concluded that the test material exhibit no risk for pyrophoricity.

Flammability, self-heating substances:

The study is scientifically not necessary, because the substance is completely molten at 160 °C.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

In the preliminary test it was found that the substance melted when heated with a gas flame and could be ignited. Within 4 minutes the fire did not spread over a length of 200 mm.

Only the molten substance burned.

The substance is therefore not easily flammable in the sense of EG-Guideline 92/69/EEC A.10 and in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

In contact with water the test substance does not evolute gases. Therefore, the test substance is not regarded as hazardous according to EG-Guideline 92/69/EEC A.12 and in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Based on the physical state, the structural elements and the melting point the substance has not to be classified as pyrophoric solid nor as self-heating substance and in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
