A total of thirteen subjects diagnosed with dermatitis following occupational exposure to Be compounds: 10 subjects exposed to BeF, 2 subjects exposed to ground beryllium metal, and 1 subject exposed to undefined (water drippings from surface of overhead pipes coated with dust of various beryllium compounds.

The study also included a control group with 16 subjects who had never before been exposed to Be compounds.

None of the subjects tested positive for BeO sensitivity in a patch test. There was also no reaction in 16 volunteers not previously exposed to Be compounds.

Other compounds tested included BeFl2, BeSO4, BeCl2, Be(NO3)2 in addition to Be metal. These compounds tested positive to various degrees. Some of these compounds also caused "spontaenous flare-ups" in the control cohort with no prior exposure to beryllium compounds. This was not observed with BeO.
