Description of key information

Two reliable studies were available, one Klimisch 1 and one Klimisch 2 study. The algae growth inhibition test (Hüls, 1995) was selected as the key study: no growth inhibition was observed in the study.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
900 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
900 mg/L

Additional information

The Klimisch 2 study of Hüls (1995) was performed according to OECD guideline 201 and reported slightly lower EC50 and NOEC values (i.e. > 900 mg/L) for 72h for biomass and growth rate. This study was not scored K1 due to missing information regarding test conditions. However, this study contained sufficient detail to be considered as the key study.

The Klimisch 1 study of Hughes (2003) was performed according to OECD guideline 201 and EPA OPPTS 850.5400 guideline. The study reported EC50 and NOEC values of > 929 mg/L for 72h and 96h for growth rate and biomass.
